The Center for Quantum Nanoscience (QNS) is holding an art contest called ‘SPIN ART’ to share the excitement of basic science with the art community and the general public. Spin and quantum mechanics are the main subjects of QNS’s research. QNS hopes that this contest can create a bridge between its researchers and the people who have interest in science. The winners and the final round artwork may be exhibited in the Research Cooperation Building at Ewha Womans University in Seoul.

Subject

Spin and/or quantum
Spin lives in a tiny world that is even smaller than an atom.
Amazing things happen there. Use your imagination to express the quantum world!
Read our wonderful article introducing spin: "Finding “Spin” in René Magritte’s Work"

The topic of this “Spin Art” art contest is the spin in quantum mechanics. Quantum mechanics is an academic study that deals with a world that is even smaller than atoms. Atoms and molecules make up all matter on earth. Sometimes, surreal things happen in such a small world. Among those, there is the concept of spin. Spin has unique properties, including “discontinuity,” “superposition,” and “entanglement.” We are holding a contest to artistically express these characteristics. The characteristic of spin has been explained below by comparing it to the work of the Surrealist artist René Magritte, to enhance the general understanding of artists who communicate with visual language. (It may be unrelated to the original intentions of René Magritte).

We also have a comic!

About QNS

The Center for Quantum Nanoscience (QNS)

Engineering the Quantum Future

QNS is laying the foundation for future technology by exploring the use of quantum behavior atom by atom on surfaces with highest precision. QNS is driven to discover and develops scientific tools in order to create new frontiers in its area of basic science. Drawing on Director Andreas Heinrich’s scientific leadership, QNS has filled its world class facility at Ewha Womans University with ground-breaking tools and inquisitive minds immersed in a culture of exploration.

QNS enables the curiosity of young researchers as they embrace the risks, patience, and exacting work of basic research in quantum phenomena at the nano scale. We aim to build capacity of future quantum researchers in Korea as well as increase public understanding of quantum nanoscience. Director Heinrich and all team members at QNS respect and appreciate the opportunity IBS provides to support Korean leadership in the dawning Quantum Era.
