Novel Organic Spintronic Devices

Molecular materials have been attracting much attention from both the magnetism and the spintronics research communities [1]. For example, its ability for tuning the interfacial properties of magnetic materials has opened a fruitful interdisciplinary field of research [2]. In this talk, I will briefly explain the topic of spinterfaces and its recent development into devices.

Moreover, we should consider that there are still other aspects in molecular spintronics which have not explored in much depth. For example, molecules are an ideal playground for both light and spin degrees of freedom. I will also show two recent results that exemplify the relation between light and spin in organic spintronics devices. Using a photo-sensitive molecule such as F16CuPc, we have been able to tune independently the resistance value of the device by light irradiation and magnetic field. Our results lead to a multifunctional 2-bit memory device [5]. Turning on the entanglement between spin and light has led us to create a molecular spin photovoltaic device. In this novel structure, the photovoltaic effect can be tuned by a small magnetic field with improvements beyond 10%. Moreover, light irradiation is capable of tuning the spin polarization of the current flowing across the molecular layer up to 100% [6].
