Session 3 Break Down the Wall – Creativity and Communication

Talk: May 16, 2019, 15:00 ~ 15:30

From Quantum Nanoscience to ‘the Boy and his Atom’

Basic science has become a crucial element for the future success of the Korean economy. In order to promote world-class basic science research, Korea recently created the Institute for Basic Science. In this lecture, we will briefly introduce the research performed at the Center for Quantum Nanoscience, which has the potential to lay the foundation for future quantum technologies, such as quantum computation. Rather than focusing mostly on the science, in this presentation we will discuss why it is of crucial importance to communicate well with a general audience. Nowadays we have many tools at our disposal primarily based on social media, such as YouTube, Facebook and Naver. I will describe my experience at creating engaging content that can draw members of a general audience to science and entice them to ask deep question in a fun environment. Besides social media, this year my team at the Center for Quantum Nanoscience is reaching out to the art community to create the art of quantum and nanoscience – again with the primary goal of engaging a non-scientific audience in the complex and fascinating ideas of this research field.
