Magnetic Properties of Single Atoms, Single Molecules, and Ultrathin Heterostructures with Perpendicular Anisotropy Measured by STM, X-ray Absorption, Spectroscopy, and Magneto-optical Microscopy

I will present several experimental projects performed in our group, amongst which studies of single atoms and single molecules by STM and x-ray absorption spectroscopy and magneto-optical studies of ultrathin heterostructured layers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy.

I will also discuss two instrumental projects carried out in our lab:

– design and implementation of a radio-frequency signal path to the tunneling junction of a cryogenic scanning tunneling microscope, including amplification of the radio-frequency signal generated at the junction.

– design and construction of a wide-field magneto-optical Kerr microscope with high (~ 300 nm) optical resolution.
